CALIBRATION VS. ADJUSTMENT

Two Different Operations Often Used as Synonyms

In everyday language, terms like calibration and adjustment are often used interchangeably.
In metrology, however, they describe two distinct concepts — and confusing them can lead to misinterpreting the quality of a measurement.

Understanding the difference isn't an academic exercise: it's essential for assessing the quality of a measuring instrument, and therefore the accuracy of the measurement itself.


What is instrument calibration?

Calibration is a metrological operation aimed at establishing the relationship between the values indicated by a measuring instrument and the values of a reference standard.

Calibration does not correct the instrument. It compares it against a known, traceable reference (a primary standard) to determine how far it deviates from the true value.

The result of a calibration is a calibration certificate, which shows:
  • the errors detected (deviation from the primary standard)
  • the measurement conditions
  • the associated uncertainty
  • traceability to national or international standards
It is an act of metrological knowledge about the instrument — not a correction.


What is instrument adjustment?

Adjustment, in a technical and industrial context, means regulating a measuring instrument so that its readings are, as far as possible, consistent with the reference value.

It is therefore an active intervention, which can include:
  • mechanical or electronic adjustments
  • zero-setting
  • software corrections
  • internal alignments
While calibration describes the state of the instrument, adjustment acts on that state and corrects it so the instrument performs its function correctly — that is, providing readings as accurate as possible relative to the reference value.


A simple example

A micrometer is a measuring instrument used to detect linear dimensions with high precision — greater than what can be achieved with a caliper.
  • Calibration verifies that at 10.000 mm (the reference index of the known standard) the instrument reads 10.012 mm. An error of +12 µm is therefore detected.
  • Adjustment intervenes on the instrument (where possible) to bring the reading as close as possible to 10.000 mm.
The first operation reveals the information. The second performs the correction.


Why is this confusion so common?

The overlap between the two terms stems from imprecise usage in industrial and commercial practice.

In many contexts, people say "calibrate" when they actually mean "adjust" — that is, performing a metrological verification. Confusion is also fed by translation between languages: in Italian, taratura is usually translated as calibration, while calibrazione — meaning an intervention that regulates the instrument — more properly corresponds to adjustment.

Knowing this distinction is especially important within quality management systems (ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025), where what matters is being able to demonstrate traceability and the actual state of the instrument — not merely its correct functioning.


Calibration without adjustment (and vice versa)

Not every instrument can be adjusted.

A gauge block, for example, cannot be "regulated": it can only be calibrated, i.e. its dimensions verified against a standard. If the deviation over time becomes significant, the only solution is replacement.

Electronic instruments such as digital comparators, measuring systems, or sensors, on the other hand, can often be adjusted to reduce error.


The role of industrial metrology

In the daily practice of laboratories and quality departments, calibration and adjustment coexist.

Calibration guarantees traceability and knowledge of the error. Adjustment keeps the measurement system aligned with the requirements of the production process and applicable standards.

Knowing the difference between calibration and adjustment is the starting point for any company seeking reliable measurements, controlled processes, and decisions based on solid data.
